We kick off the year with a secondary curriculum update from Curriculum Advisor, Amber Davidson, who will unpack the shift from the 2007 achievement-objectives–based curriculum to a knowledge-rich curriculum. She’ll explore why the documents look the way they do, what has changed for secondary schools, and what the implications might be for teaching practice and student outcomes.
We’re also excited to announce our first Secondary Teachers Summit, happening on Wednesday 15 April at Google HQ in Auckland. We’ll share the details, including the purpose and a brief overview, at our Secondary Connect.

Visible Teaching & Learning
The Manaiakalani pedagogy ‘Learn, Create, Share’ or Ako, Hanga, Tohatoha, provides a shared pedagogy across our schools including secondary schools who have partnered with us. Working with a common learning language allows for the individual differences of each school, enabling them to continue with their specific pedagogical focus. For example, a number of our schools employ at least one of the following, Culturally Responsive and Relational Pedagogies, Ka Hikitia, Ka Hāpaitia, Universal Design for Learning, New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, SOLO and BLOOMS etc.
The Manaiakalani Department Discussions are online meetings held via Google Meet with teachers from across the country. The aim is to inspire teachers' practice in high school settings and network with like minded colleagues in their specialist subject area.
Come along to our community of learning to discuss a range of topics from approaches to Learn, Create, Share, to NCEA, literacy and numeracy.
