At our recent Secondary Connect, Janet Lee from the Manaiakalani Research Team explored how writing practice to support CAA readiness can happen in any subject area—not just English.
With student literacy a top priority, Janet highlighted the importance of regular, purposeful writing that focuses on audience, idea development, structure, and specific vocabulary. She also introduced provocation-based writing as a flexible and powerful tool that can be used across the curriculum to build students’ confidence and competence in written expression.
Janet encouraged teachers to integrate writing tasks into their subject areas by:
Embedding writing opportunities that link to real-world topics and inquiry
Using frameworks like SEED to help students structure their ideas
Encouraging the use of blogs as a way for students to practise writing regularly for an authentic audience
Applying clear criteria aligned with CAA standards to guide and assess student writing
This presentation was a timely reminder that we can all play a role in developing our students’ writing fluency, regardless of the subject we teach.
