Manaiakalani - Lockdown Learning

Co-constructing with students, leads to better engagement

Tuesday 23rd November

At this term's Secondary Connect, we heard from two highly proficient educators. Dr Tim Shawcross, of Westland High School and Edith Painting-Davis, the principal of Bay of Islands College. Two different presentations but with an underlining theme on how to improve students' learning outcomes during disruptive times.

The recordings and slide decks from both presentation are available below. If you would like to view the entire session, the complete video will be live shortly.

Dr Tim Shawcross

Developing literacy teaching skills as a non literacy specialist

Tim was one of the Manaiakalani Innovative Teachers this year. His inquiry investigated how to use literacy supports to improve student outcomes in theory and analysis based on NCEA music standards. Using a variety of multi-text and multi-modal resources, Tim designed some excellent teaching strategies involving student collaboration and co-construction. The overall results were most promising, and indicated just how powerful his approach has been to improving students' literacy.
