The Manaiakalani pedagogy ‘Learn, Create, Share’ puts our young people at the very centre of their learning. Consequently harnessing the affordances of digital technology, through Visible Learning and Teaching, for secondary schools requires a considered deployment of technology informed by learning focused actions.
This site brings together pedagogy, processes and procedures that we have identified best support the goals of Manaiakalani and contribute to enabling our schools to improve learning outcomes for our young people.
Matt Goodwin's example site (see right) has many of the basic elements to get started with a secondary school class site. Things you'll want to include are;
A welcoming home page, photo of you, contact info, maybe your timetable
Set up top level pages for your subjects and/or year level
Add a footer at the bottom of the site with links to other sites used i.e. Hapara, Kamar, NZQA, school website, ixl, ,
Amie Williams our facilitator based in Tairawhiti has created a range of how to videos showing you how to add elements to your class site. For extra one on one support check in with your locally based facilitator or ask about enrolling on our Digital Fluency Intensive Course.
A key component to Visible Learning and Teaching is to ensure that all of your learning resources and activities are viewable to everyone.
The best way to put this into practice is to create a class site folder with the share permissions set to 'anyone with the link can view'. Any folders or documents you create inside your Class Site 2026 folder will automatically inherit those permissions.
All mahi, resources whether they are slide decks, google docs, pdfs or images that you want to share with your students can be directly added to your class site and they will be visible.
One of the key components to helping your workflow will be having your files named correctly and in the right folders. Organise your work by having top-level folders and subfolders that align with your class site pages.
All Google Apps offer you three different ways of sharing your files and folders.
View: People can only view, they cannot change a file or share it with others. (Set your class site and your class site folder to View or specifically 'anyone with the link can view)
Comment: People will be able to make comments and suggestions, however they can’t change or share the file with others. Commenting is only on Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Draw and Google Sheets. People will not be able to comment on your site.
Edit: Editing rights allows people to make changes, accept or reject suggestions, and share the file with others. You can make your file or site editable by specific people. It's also possible to allow 'everyone with the link to edit' so be careful that you set the right permissions that you want.

This error shows on a google site when it is not shared and therefore, not visible.
Change the share permissions on the file or folder to 'Anyone with the link'.
